and advice for any adult with concerns about the mental health of a young child or person.

Mind campaigns to improve the lives of people with mental health problems, The Mindinfoline
(0845 766 0163 charged at local call rates) offers callers confidential help on a range of
mental health issues. Mind provides a special legal service to the public, lawyers and mental
health workers. It has a network of over 200 local Mind associations in England and Wales
offering supported housing, crisis helplines, drop-in centres, counselling, befriending,
advocacy, employment and training schemes, and other services.
Rethink

Rethink is a campaigning charity working with people with severe mental illness, their carers,
families and friends through a network of mutual support groups around the country. Services
include advocacy, carer support, community support, employment and training, helplines, housing

Sane campaigns to raise awareness and respect for people with mental illness and their
families, improve education and training, and secure better services. It undertakes research
into the causes of serious mental illnesses and provides information and emotional support to
those experiencing mental health problems, their families and carers through SANELINE. Call

British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy is a professional body for
counsellors and psychotherapists. Use their 'Find a therapist' section to locate
professionals in your area or find out about the different types of therapy. Although other
there are other web directories of counsellors. The BACP is the largest and broadest body
within the sector. Through its work BACP ensures that it meets its remit of public protection
whilst also developing and informing its members.

Noiseconcern.org is a new information tool for the public that is designed to tackle all levels
of neighbour noise problems. It provide noise sufferers with advice on how to make initial
contact with their neighbour right through to how to take legal action against persistent noise
makers. Noise makers can find out how to reduce noise from their activities.

Thurrock council's site for members of the public defines anti-social behaviour and
explains their policies and procedures and what response complainants can expect if they
reporting anti-social behaviour as council tenants or non-council tenants. The site allows
complainants to report on line and keeps the community up-to-date on recent action taken to
tackle anti-social behaviour.

Social housing and anti-social behaviour
Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS)

empowerment. TPAS offer Information, advice and training on all aspects of involving tenants in
their housing management and supportS tenants and community groups to take on a more

Housing ombudsman service

Deals with disputes between housing association landlords (or their agents) and tenants in
England. The Housing ombudsman will investigate cases of maladministration but the complainant
must complete the internal complaints procedure of the landlord or agent before the Ombudsman
can intervene.
Local government ombudsman service

The local government ombudsmen investigate complaints of injustice arising from
maladministration by local authorities and certain other bodies. The ombudsmen can investigate
complaints about how the council has done something but they cannot question what a council has
done simply because someone does not agree with it. A complainant must give the council
concerned an opportunity to deal with a complaint against it first.
